High School Senior Photography Shoot

Being my first time taking photographs for a senior, I just dove right in to see what I could catch. What I caught was treasure! I’m discovering seniors can be one of the best models out there. Full of energy, warmth, willingness to try a variation of shots, and most love the camera.

She asked for the shoot to take place at the botanical flower gardens in Austin,TX. There wasn’t just flowers, but old rustic buildings, bridges, bamboo walls and cacti sections which were all great photo backdrops. The key is to find all settings as an option, not just to focus on one backdrop.

I wanted to capture her exuberance of going out into the world independently with an air of confidence. I hadn’t met her before but I know her father who I worked with for many years, almost like a second father to me. Right off the bat I knew I would get along with her just like I do with her father.

Get to know them somewhat on a personal level ask them what they plan on doing after graduating, what their aspirations are, what makes them feel the most comfortable when taking pictures and to provide any examples they want you to take of.

I had her do different poses but also had her feel comfortable where she would naturally pose herself. It wasn’t too difficult being she is a natural model! Shoot as many pictures as possible to where you can find the best nuggets at the end to present to them and their family.

I enjoyed the experience and I think she did too! This is why I love taking photographs to connect with people and shine them in the best possible light.

Hope you enjoy! You can catch more photos of this shoot under my photography portfolio tab.

What has been your favorite photo shoot, being the model or photographer? Feel free to share!

10 Reasons Virgin Mary can be a Role Model for Women

Virgin Mary made out of metal and glass

Virgin Mary made out of metal and glass (at a corner store in east Austin,TX)

Ever since Easter has passed, I think of how Jesus came to be, how he was able to rise again.

Of course he came from God but God needed a vessel, who was Mary. She was a strong sturdy soul who could carry this weight, the weight of the world all inside of her to hold. God was there along the way but let’s face it this is a heavy responsibility that I would have double thoughts about because you don’t see God there physically holding your hand along the way. Instead you have to have faith which she sure did, she accepted without questions or hesitation.

As I commute from work to home I see the Virgin Mary displayed around me at corner stores and front yards of homes. She shines her graceful face holding a cool demeanor looking over us as we commute in this thing we call life. I must confess I don’t attend church on a regular basis, find myself having mixed beliefs and not set on one religion.

Although I do believe in a higher power and do call this higher power, God. This power I believe is within us all, it is love and some of us just need to reach further within to bring it forth. After attending this past weekend to an Easter service at a 125 year old church, I was overcome with a feeling of love and beauty all around.

Mary brought forth her love from within to bring forth God’s son, who would sacrifice himself to forgive our sins. She sacrificed in a way by knowing she would be giving up her son for the betterment of the world.

Sister-Mary bible verse dried flower petals

My drawing of Virgin Mary using leftover dried flower petals

I have 10 points below of why she is our role model and how we can implement some or all into our own lives to accomplish our dreams.

Had her son while still a virgin (this has been argued but I’m going with the story I knew as a child). Joseph planned to divorce her after learning she was pregnant but because of Mary’s strong believe to carry this baby and of God’s will he decided to stay with her.

In our own lives we will come across something we strongly believe in but at times our loved ones might be against it but if we believe in it with our whole heart then continue on and I am sure the ones who really care about you will stay on board like Joseph did.

Angel Gabriel appeared to her to announce that she was the divine selection to be the mother of Jesus. She responded, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done unto me according to your word.”

Signs can come to us in dreams, billboards, music like a guardian angel. Up to us to have our eyes open to see these signs and interpret how it will help you in life to lead you to your dreams coming true.

A member of the early Christian community in Jerusalem.

Become a member of a community that supports your passion, your beliefs and that will help guide you along the path of life.

She married Joseph and accompanied him to Bethlehem. No place in the inn she conceived her son, Jesus in the manger.

If you are traveling, going on your path to accomplish your dreams and come upon an obstacle find another way to conceive it.

Many churches believe she is not only Mother of Jesus but Mother of God.

As we follow our destiny, we will find that you’ll gain a larger group of loved ones that you will give to and vice versa.

First follower of Jesus.

Follow others that you believe in, that will also help you in your own life even if no one else is following them. Or can see it as your own passion that you are trying to achieve, get it done even when you have no followers, viewers, Facebook followers, they will come eventually.

She asked Jesus to provide wine when it ran low at a wedding. She believed in him and she was to be a witness to the glory of her son.

Believe in others even when they don’t believe in themselves. Or let’s say your own business hasn’t produced results, push further by creating another product and see where it goes.

She approached Jesus when he was left behind at the temple. She wanted to and did protect Jesus from getting himself in trouble with the leaders.

Protect your baby, your own dream business, when there are naysayers protect it and shield it from them until it can shine bright on it’s own and succeed.

Mary’s concern for helping the poor like them. The Letter of James states that her and her children believe that genuine religion means taking care of people like them.

Not only do we help ourselves but seek to help others who are in need. I find when we help others we get much more in return than we ever expected.

She witnessed her son Jesus being crucified.

There might be something or someone we hold close to our hearts that we lose but if we know it’s time is up, let it go for this will make room for something so much better.

I hope you enjoyed! From being inspired by her I drew her. I find myself continuing my passion of art. So you too go forth and create your passions into reality!

My time at SXSW 2016

Johnny Cash and June Carter

Drawing of Johnny Cash and June Carter

I drew the truest sound couple I know, Johnny Cash and June Carter. Austin is flooded with artists who draw their imagination and paint murals that lightens the day for us. This power music couple has stood within the test of times through our headphones and speakers. The murals we see now but one day may be a ball of dust but will carry the music on by these artists and so many more.

Mural of Willie Nelson (Austin,TX)

Mural of Willie Nelson (Austin,TX)

The Willie Nelson mural was created just before this year’s SXSW. He was the first to showcase his music on ACL, Austin City Limits Live television show in 1974, paving the ways for others to shine their music unto us. He is like the logo of Austin, Texas. This mural stands bright over downtown welcoming all who come forth to feel the music in their bones.

SXSW comes and goes every year but I never grow weary of it and think I never will. I hear the grunts and complaints of people who work downtown, the locals avoiding this area when this music celebration spills over.

I welcome it though, I welcome the hustling bustling of crowds, the music pounding through the bars, authors speaking their hearts out. I welcome the free drinks, the free sunglasses, the free totes, the free coffee and free performances to watch.

I didn’t snatch a SXSW wrist badge, didn’t take off from work but took advantage of my lunch times, mini breaks and stayed after work when I could to catch the festivities. Tied to my desk, staring down my computer, I accepted this dance with music downtown. It was a breath of fresh air to see new people flying and driving in to hear music from all over the world.

There was no itinerary but instead I decided to go by the seat of my pants wonder out with coworkers to discover what was a few blocks away, what rabbit hole I could fall into.

Taco Truck (Austin,TX)

Taco Truck (Austin,TX)

First of all there was the food! Need fuel for this event so what better way than to have the staple of food trucks all along the downtown streets. This food trunk in particular had a cute sign reflecting the actual “I Love You So Much” mural we have on South Congress. Not only that but I managed to snatch free Chick-fil-A burgers at Pandora event along with hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches at the Videotape recharge your phone event.

Cafe Bustelo provided free coffee of your choice for their grand opening during the festivities straight in the heart of 6th Street. Their coffee and their ambiance setting made a strong impact.

What better way to pair coffee than with donuts? After the fast pace walking along the streets we decided to stop at Voodoo to snatch donuts. Our good friend coworker was so kind to give us each one which was enough to give me the greatest sweet tooth I ever encountered but so worth it.

Autographed “Born For This” Book (photo by Rafael Marquez)

The first day of the week we managed to sneak into the event where we caught a free presentation from the author, Chris Guillebeau. It was a serendipitous moment all falling into place perfectly to find this gem of a guy who I had heard on various interviews one held by one of my favorite YouTube star, Marie Forleo. I was inspired by him because he traveled to every single country, headed his own business, found his joy, and interviewed people across the globe of how they found their joy that lead to their calling.

Netspend Local Artist Gallery (photo by me)

Right here at my job was an art gallery for anyone to walk in and enjoy. The event was held by Netspend, another company that shares the building with us who shared local artist’s pieces for the public to view. I feel it was a way for travelers to get to know Austin better and for the chance to buy these works of art to share the beauty of them to others.

During Saint Patrick’s Day we caught a band representing the history of Ireland, walking along the streets going in and out of bars playing the traditional Irish music dressed to the nines in kilts.

St. Patrick's Day SXSW 2016

St. Patrick’s Day SXSW 2016

Grabbed green beer on 2nd street where people in green were in rows of crowds mingling. The place was a cute quaint outside venue for free where right next door, the Irish pub was charging $15 to get in. I was on a streak of free events and wasn’t going to break it.

Street performers filled us in awe of their talents and street wear. One that stood out among the crowds were the Ninja Turtles. Their sign read, “Need Money for Pizza.” Almost every day I would see them along the streets giving people a ride down memory lane.

And had to end on a high note, the main reason SXSW happens, the music. I didn’t catch any big name bands but finding hidden gems made it just as special. For the Pandora event, a Canadian band, The Strumbellas was about to perform during my lunch break and so I spent filling myself up watching their performance. Their music was delicious along with their lyrics that fueled me to feel the love of music.

Not only were there big bands but small street bands that made just as big of a crowd. There were jazz street bands, drummers using buckets and sole singers. Below is a compilation of the music I videotaped along the way.

Hope you enjoyed my mini sound bites of SXSW. What type of music drives your soul, gets you going?

How to Get Luck in Your Life

Drawing of Lucky the Dragon by Me

Drawing of Lucky the Dragon by Me

Above is my drawing I did for St. Patrick’s Day. I wanted it to be of a fairy tale mystic feeling using a dragon sleeping on a bed of four leaf clovers because how much more magical is that!

As the day came to an end, I thought of all the stories and myths behind this day. I feel that we can be lucky in all of our lives. We do not need to find the leprechaun at the end of the rainbow or a four leave clover to have luck.

Luck is within ourselves waiting for us to find it and bring it forth. One way finding your luck is meditating to be still to where you can find your innermost needs that your heart has been yearning for.

Another way is to write down what lucky incidences have come your way that day. Where it feels like a serendipitous/ah ha moment coming together too perfectly to be a coincidence.

Just recently I had a lucky moment during the SXSW festivities here in Austin,TX. My coworker and I decided to walk around during lunch to take advantage that we are located downtown where it was all happening. We stumbled upon an event that my coworker had heard by mouth that morning about it being fee and free cappuccino. We couldn’t say no to…yummy coffee!

SXSW Event - Speaker - Chris Guillebeau

SXSW Event – Speaker – Chris Guillebeau

I had no idea what the event was for when all of a sudden I saw their slide show about an author who was going to speak about finding what you were born to do. It all clicked it was Chris Guillebeau who has been interviewed by some of my favorite people like Marie Forleo. Sure enough he soon stepped on stage at the event and was talking about his new book, Born for This. I couldn’t believe we were hearing him speak for free and not only that he handed out a handful of free books that he autographed himself. Come to find out he was originally to speak earlier but he had to be moved to a later time, the time I happened to be there. This was a truly magical lucky moment.

So write down, take a photo or draw your lucky moments that you “stumble” upon and feel free to share with others! It’s like a leprechaun steering you to your pot of gold just need to look out for the signs!

I plan on writing a review of this book after I am done reading and next week to showcase all the free SXSW festivities that I attended!

10 Ways to Love Yourself

Photograph by Me (taken in a public bathroom)

As Valentine’s Day approaches, I think of how we put so much energy into how we’ll celebrate for our loved ones or what our loved ones will surprise us with that we don’t think of the most important person, you. It took me many moons to realize that the most vital action is to love you which in turn helps you love others wholeheartedly. I thought what better way to show self-love than to give you ideas of how to celebrate you on Valentine’s day and any day of the year! Let me know if you implemented any of these activities and the outcome of it. Feel free to comment! : )

Do a Self-Portrait

I did this with just dry-eraser markers on my mirror and topped it off with a selfie. Write an inspiring quote next to your drawing and draw it out with whatever you have whether it be markers, chalks, pencil, paint or anything else that you have laying around your home. I shared this on Instagram so feel free to show off your master piece!

Love Letter to Self

I admit this one was a hard one for me. Hard to admit how wonderful I am because I feel there is a stigma that if we show/say how great we are we get labeled as conceited, full of ourselves or we will get denied by others. I am the hardest on myself but slowly though I’m learning to take notice of my put down thoughts and turn it around by saying to myself like I would to a friend “Elisa, it is OK and it will be OK, things happen but just know you are wonderful.” Writing this down is even more powerful, take out that pen and paper to write down all that you love about yourself. Show it off or keep it in your nightstand to reread it whenever you want. Trust me you will feel good inside.

Have a Grateful Journal:

I have a few journals (I love journals!) where I write down all that I am thankful for in my life with drawings not only that but write down feel good words that describe me or that I strive to be. You don’t have to go by this exact model but just writing down a few items you are thankful for makes an impact in how you feel, makes you appreciate what you have in the present moment and is a great start or end of the day.

Showcase Your Baby Pics:

I picked out a few of my favorite baby pics and blasted them on one of my past blog posts. Go through your albums or throwback pics you may have been tagged with and post/repost them on social media like Instagram or Facebook to share with others. You’ll get lots of ooos and aahhs feeling like you are a child again remembering the great memories you had.

FullSizeRender (2)

Favorite Part of Body

My favorite part is my skin tone that I feel glistens great against the sun in the summer! OK I felt a little cheesy writing that down but we need to show our vulnerability! Whether it be your smile or your whole body, showcase it and tell us why it’s your favorite part.

Pamper yourself

Give yourself a gift that makes your body and soul feel good. I have done a bubble bath, painted my nails and given myself flowers. I painted the ones below for an Instagram challenge where I wrote a letter on each nail to mean; “You Are Mesmerizing to See” Might not have made much sense to anyone else but all that matters if it does for you. It was nice to see this message on my pretty painted nails every time I looked down.

Go on a Date with Yourself

I usually go out on my own for lunch where I work but I feel its a stronger statement to go out for dinner on your own. Try not to be on your phone the whole time and just take in what is around you savoring the smells, sights and food!

Take some time alone whether it be at a park, in your backyard or in your bedroom. Can be from a minute to however long you want. Below is a park I go to for nature, just to lay on the grass, close my eyes, breathe and you might even catch a rainbow like I did! Also here is a link to a guided meditation that I use to help me focus.

Post Up Selfie without Makeup!

Now this was scary! Not that I wear that much makeup but I don’t usually post up selfies because at first I was against it but really why not celebrate how you look. I think selfies are a way to boost yourself up when you need a pick me upper. So whether it be with makeup or not take the best angle of yourself and show it off!

A Motivational Quote to Yourself on the Mirror

I’ve started writing little motivational quotes or cheer sentences on my bathroom mirror. My current mirror message says “Everything is falling into the right place as it should. Thank You God” I feel it helps start my day in the right direction, keeps me going knowing it is all coming together perfectly. Give it a try on your bathroom mirror, body mirror in your bedroom, makeup mirror or any mirror that you see daily to cheer you on for the day.

Bonus! Check out Small Seed’s post about an activity project they put together to promote self-love for this month. I’m diving in and hope you do as well! Let me know how it goes or if you have any other ways that you show self-love in the comments 🙂

33 Photo Shots that are Rockin Awesome

I just turned 33! I don’t know about you but I’m rockin’ it! I have decided this year not to dwell on getting older as I have in the past but celebrate how far I’ve come to being here yet another year. To emphasize this I have looked back at my past photography shots picking some of my favorites, to be exact 33 of them.

This exercise has helped me appreciate the years I’ve had here along with giving me fuel to keep getting better. Below is my list with a snippet about each photo. I hope they bring a smile to your face 🙂

Beya a Piece of My Heart

1. Location was at the state park in my small hometown. I chose this outside setting because she is in her natural element in nature. I liked how the blue water matched the blue bench connecting it all together with the trees receding in the back giving you depth to match her deep gaze.

Beaumont who is our Faithful Family Dog

2. We thought we could never replace our first pug but he won us over. This is a simple setting one tone background, keeping the main focus on him.

Luna and her Mother.

Luna and her Mother

3. Luna was the sole kitten born, pretty rare for cats. They were inseparable and identical in personality. Caught this sweet moment of them curled up together on my table. I like how they seem to be molded together showcasing their strong bond.

4. He may be tiny in size but big in attitude. He is my step dad’s dog who protects him anywhere they go. Because of his funny expressions, I created a funny comic style with what I believe he was thinking at that moment.

My Sister and Brother at Enchanted Rock

My Sister and Brother at Enchanted Rock

5. Enchanted Rock is one of our favorite family hiking spots. I liked capturing the two in stride into the wide blue sky.

Sunflowers in my Neighborhood Backyard

6. My area still contains vast pieces of land which is little by little being taken over by homes. I’m glad I was able to catch this wild free thing before they have the chance of disappearing.

My Front Yard Plant

7. My first flower bush that I planted in my very own yard. I chose these because of their flowers that produce my favorite color. I focused on the flower upfront to view it’s details.

Hummingbird in my Backyard

8. My dad introduced me to the love of hummingbirds. As soon as I placed this feeder outside they came swooping in. One evening I remember sitting out in my backyard having hummingbirds flying right past me to the feeder. It was a magical moment.

Country Life in Kerrville, TX

9. I love riding the country roads just gazing out the window catching the various animal life that we have. I took this shot because of the way they were sitting next to each other in sync.

Country Life

10. More country life, can’t get enough!

Antique Tractor

11. Tractor for show at the annual Fredericksburg, Texas Fair.

Cutting Lumber for Fair Show

12. This man performed at the fair. He has lived the country life all his life and to this day he still enjoys what he does. That is one of the keys to life.

Seagulls at Port Aransas, TX

13. Trying to catch a seagull. The beach is a part of me, I grew up partly at the beach when visiting my mom’s side of the family in Honduras who lived next to the coast.

Seagulls by the Shore

14. More beach life! Loved how they were gazing all at the same direction into the sea.

Sea Urchin in Hawaii

15. Beautiful living creatures in the sea. This sea urchin was found in Hawaii, a trip come true which is now off my bucket list!

Hawaii Beach

15. I wanted to catch the blue sky touching the blue water as if coming together into one form with the mountains on opposite ends which almost look like giant turtles swimming in the sea.

16. Parasailing is off the bucket list as well! I liked how I had the shapes seem almost 2-D against what looks like a black and white background.

Beach Umbrella

17. Bright colors like the rainbow make me happy, enough said.

18. Gazing out to the skyline of Honolulu, capturing a pair enjoying the vast green land.

The Stairway to Heaven in Honolulu

19. Caught people climbing up one of the highest, steepest points in Hawaii. I like the contrast of all the greenery with the white stairs standing out having pops of colors of people hiking up.

Mayan Ruins at Copan, Honduras

20. My mother’s home country where for the first time we had her and her family see the ruins. I tried to be on the highest point to take in the vast deep land’s richness.

Chicago, Illinois

21. My first trip to Chicago. These boats were near the ferry on Lake Michigan. The pattern within a pattern is what made this a great photo.

The Bean in Chicago

22. Had to capture the iconic Bean! Wanted to emphasize the reflection of the skyscrapers. These skyscrapers is what makes the city unique.

Live Music in Austin, Texas

23. Capturing the music that is all around my current home city, Austin, Texas. It’s as if these live people are actually a part of the mural, can’t tell who is really alive and ironically it was in front of the sign that reads “Live Music”.

6th Street in Austin, Texas

24. Keep Austin Weird.

Bratwurst on 6th Street

25. What is Austin without a picture of food from a food trailer! One of the best hot dogs in town.

X Games Austin, Texas

27. Pre-party on Congress Avenue for the X games. Competing among other larger cities such as Chicago, we were chosen one to be the host of the X Games.

Chinese New Year

28. The people of China Town in Austin, Texas celebrating the new year in the most brightest animated creatures I have ever seen.

Woodworker at the Hawaii Market

29. Caught this man in his element chipping away into the core of his passion at the weekly Hawaiian Market Plaza.

Pearl Harbor Memorial

30. My trip to Hawaii happened to be around Memorial time, perfect timing to see an abundance of flags flying freely that so many people died for. I salute to these women and men.

My Mother

31. My mother, my heart. The lighting cascading on her face reminded me of an angel, which I truly believe she is one herself.

32. I end with my dog, my best friend who never lets me down, who is full of love and happiness which I feel I captured at this moment.

Port Aransas, Texas

Port Aransas, Texas

33. Last two photos is for the number 33!

I have decided this is the year for me to jump, to rock it out because if I don’t I will never know what’s on the other side, the side of dreams.

On my birthday, I literally rocked it out at the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis concert.  They are one of few that do not work under a record label company. Doing it their way, living their dreams and being successful at it! I realized most of his songs moved me, inspired me to be better, to treat everyone equally and to love wholeheartedly.

My Top 9 Instagram 2015 Posts and Why

2015 was a year I plunged into Instagram head first not knowing  what it was all about. I fell in love with this social being, all the beautiful photos in which most did not need words with creative entrepreneurs inspiring many to strive for their aspirations. I gradually learned the art of creating hashtags, thinking of the setting, colors and just overall composition of my photo before posting. As months went on I took notice how I latched on in a way of almost lust/obsessed sort of way that turned into pure enjoyment.

Instagram has been good to me, had me delve back into my creative juices, show off my love for art and try to help/inspire others along the way. To kick off this year, we had the capability to see our best 9 posts for 2015 based on number of Instagram likes. If you haven’t already done so find our your best 9 by going to the following 2015bestnine page.

I’m digging deeper below into why I believe each of these posts won the top place and the meaning of why I took these shots.

  • #9 Post: My Wish

Around this time I still held the sorrow of one of our beloved comedian actors passing away. This post was for an Instagram challenge of what we would wish for. Mine was to do what I love as a living. What better way than to encompass a genie in a bottle but not just any genie, the genie from the Aladdin movie played by Robin Williams. I used a blue ink gel pen to, made him a bit round just like his character. Robbin Williams did what he loved even though at the end his inner demons tormented him he surged on as far as he could go.

  • #8 Post: Cat Love

Instagrammers love animals, I am one of them! This cat holds a dear place in my heart. Right before I met this cat, I had lost my cat when moving to my new home never to be found again. She would never be replaced but this cat found a way into my heart. She reminded me of my own with her wild antics and running to my door when she saw me come home. They even had similar colors, both females with an air of “I own this joint”. She had a close encounter a few months ago with dogs that went lose and grabbed a hold of her but she fought through even with surgery, hid in her owner’s house but soon after was out and about to her fearless ways. In this photo she is perched on top of my car, statuesque stance just like the queen that she is.

The Neighborhood Cat aka Queen B

My Cat that I lost

  • #7 Post: Gratitude

This post was to show gratitude, a list of items I was currently thankful for with a drawing by each. I think this gravitated to many others because it is a reminder to not take for granted what we have and appreciate all that is around us. I challenge you to keep a daily, a Thursday or any time of the month gratitude journal! I will continue doing similar gratitude posts this year.

  • #6 Post: Street Art about Love and Music

Austin,Texas has so many great murals around the city, it represents us as an artist based city painted all around. This particular street art not only represents  love but the love of music which are two important items we hold close to our heart. The play on lighting, the house looking like a face with a heart pumping life full of music I believe sent a strong message that had many people give likes.

  • #5 Post: Seasons of Nature

In many of my pieces I have a reused item to remind ourselves to recycle in hopes of helping planet Earth. For this piece I reused leaves from my yard playing tribute to the Fall season having a play on words. My message was to shed away your fears, let go of whatever is holding you back so you can achieve your calling in life. I think this piece was ranked high due to the simplicity and blending of fall colors that pulled together the message.

  • #4 Post: Self Portrait

Self Portrait! This was one of my first drawing post in which I played tribute to the artist, Frida. I wanted to resemble her but myself as well with my own face in the background blending into the self portrait drawing I did with dry erase markers. The quote itself also gives out a vulnerability, stating we are alone more times than not but to embrace it. I’ve started writing inspirational messages/drawings on my mirror in the bathroom and hallway to pump me up in the mornings and I advise you to do the same!

  • #3 Post: Portrait Drawing with Reused Items

This is a drawing of my man and my dog, two of the most endearing things I have in my life. My goal for the composition was to mimic the style of Gustav Klimt by doing shapes and flowers that create the forms. But to go further I used fallen flowers that I found on my neighborhood sidewalk. These are Marigolds which are actually used for Day of the Dead to honor loved ones.  My piece wasn’t to honor passing away but to showcase how the relationship between humans and dogs are forever. This was my first series post about my dog, Beya. I believe this was one of the top because it combined many of our favorite things in life, love, our pets and portraying a famous artist.

  • #2 Post: Drawing of Space

This was my first piece to use googly eyes which I think made the biggest hit. Also It was about space and had a inspirational message, “Take Notice Above to Catch Love”. It helped that I had tags to groups about the planets, magic and universe. At this time two planets were rotating in December marking the end of the year of the last planets we would see. I believe many of us are interested in Space because we wonder how we are a part of this life.

  • #1 Post: Street Art with a Drawing of Iconic Couple

Everybody loves famous couples, I know I’ve always been intrigued of how couples met and the secret to a lasting relationship. I used two great top items, street art from Austin,Texas and the well known chef, Julia Childs with her husband. I drew them with pencil, coloring in the hearts red to have this symbol stand out connecting to the street art message. I then used Photoshop to have them stand in front of the street art photo that I took as if they are posing in front of the mural like many of us do. I believe the biggest take away was it represented love which we all strive for in this world.

And that is a wrap of last year with my most highlighted Instagram inspire shots! Next post will be about my best to date photo shoots.

Happy New Year to all and make the best of it!!

A Poem about a Grapefruit

Grapefruit Poem

Poem and mixed media illustration by me

And so I write a poem about my father. He reminded me of a grapefruit, hard on the outside but delicate inside with a distinguished taste that had an extra sweetness found nowhere else. This fruit has similar characteristics of the moon with little dents and creases, pinkish reddish color that the moon gives out on special times of the year. So the ring around the shape of the moon in my drawing is a reused peel. I have gone through many hard times thinking of why my dad left us. Most of my art reflect this but not just directly about my dad but about how all of us at times cover ourselves in this hard armor not opening up to show our true selves. Some of us go through this without ever being able to overcome it at the end. Now I’m learning we need to reach out to the ones we love even when it seems they don’t need it because its those times they may need it the most.

I always remembered his love for all foods but one of his favorites was grapefruit. It was not just that he loved it but how he ate it as if it was a ritual. It was a simple act that somehow caught me in awe of it each time. He grabbed the largest one that he could find, cut into two with the largest knife we had with sugar poured generously all over using the largest spoon, scooping up mouthfuls covered in sugar. Everything he used was big because he himself was bigger than life.

My dad and his love for biking

With the grapefruit representing the moon, I wanted a play on of the movie, ET that suited best for my poem. My father not only loved grapefruit but loved biking. At nights when he could not sleep because of his nightmares he would get up and bike as far as he could until the sun came up. Depression is a large black hole that can swallow you whole. At the end the hole caught up with him. My piece shows a bit of darkness all around pulling you away but that there is faith from the seeds that have fallen onto earth to keep going, to keep your root alive.

The moon

Took this moon shot in Hawaii, a place my dad loved to visit

The poem written below without the images

His love for Grapefruit

He was a tart hard grapefruit

Always moving as an uproot

Kept his feelings on mute

Covered himself as a brute

Tried to fill voids with loot

Steered his life not giving a hoot

Rode his bike on his own route

So far he reached the moon afoot

His seeds fell down a chute

He looks from above leaving a tribute

To keep alive your root

My dad hiking in what feels like the moon or mars.

Although my dad left us at the very end he went for what he loved as much as he could. He wanted to travel all the states which he did except for Alaska. I hope to achieve this feat for him. He hiked, biked, swam, built things, did all that he wanted to do. And I admire him for that.

InspireShot #5 – You’re Butter Half

I pass this mural every day and each time I stare at it in awe as if it’s my first time to see it. The message surrounded by the bright old fashion images just makes me happy. It’s as if I have had breakfast to energize me for the day ahead in cubicle life.

Instead of capturing people against this mural I decided to draw Julia Child and her husband, Paul as if they are posing against this backdrop that defined them. She was one of the first women to make a mark in the culinary world. Her husband helped her see what was there all along in herself, a chef. Julia Child hadn’t realized her full passion until she started cooking for the first time for her husband. He was there, every step of the way in helping his love achieve her dream, even created a kitchen for her as the vessel that would take them on the journey of food.

Food is vital to us living, brings people closer together than anything else can. Just the act of creating a meal for someone can bring pure joy. The drawing I did of Julia and Paul shows one of their traditions they did on Valentines day. They would cut out paper hearts to wear as they hosted a dinner party. I decided to do something similar but with actual food. Below is a piece I made with reused eggs that spell out the word, love. Break yourself open to spill the love over unto others.

Society still places a stigma that we need to get married at a certain age or we’ll be old spinster maids. She met him at age 31 and didn’t start her full blown chef dream until she was in her 40’s. See it is never too late to find the love of your life and the love for yourself.  Take each moment as a precious gift for you to use the best way you can. Why not take the risk of finding our-self, our butter half into achieving our dreams because what’s the worse that can happen?

I have always loved food, all and any kinds of food. Most of my baby pics are of me stuffing my face with food in pure happiness. Food is a key ingredient in our lives. If we enjoy and appreciate each bite then food will be our friend who in turns makes our soul and body healthy. Just being conscious by listening to what our body needs as fuel will take us to the right direction in finding the best food for us.

Me as a baby stuffing my face in pure joy!

Bread has been a key ingredient since the beginning of time. Just look to the bible and you will find verses about bread;
Matthew 26:26 – And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed [it], and brake [it], and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

1 Corinthians 10:17 – For we [being] many are one bread, [and] one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

I end with a couple of quotes from Julia and Paul Child and a Smithsonian article that sums up what love is when finding your butter half. Also can’t end without mentioning the Julie & Julia movie along with a love song! There are so many love songs containing lyrics about food but I think The Four Tops – I Can’t Help Myself, song wraps it up the best! Sugar Pie Honey Bunch….I can’t help myself…I love you and nobody else!

“For us the kitchen is the soul of our house,” Julia Child

“We had a happy marriage because we were together all the time. We were friends as well as husband and wife. We just had a good time.” — Julia Child

“How fortunate we are at this moment in our lives! Each doing what he most wants, in a marvelously adapted place, close to each other, superbly fed and housed, with excellent health, and few interruptions.”Paul Child

The movie, Julie and Julia starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child did a good job of depicting her aspiring life along with the love she and Paul had for each other. I love Meryl Streep! Should definitely check it out if you haven’t already 🙂
